Myanmar cyclone, massive death toll.

Posted by WadeFulp May. 8, 2008 @ 2:03 PM EDT

A powerful cyclone hit Myanmar, formerly Burma, and has left tens of thousands dead and missing. Many more may die in the aftermath due to disease, dirty drinking water, etc. Aid has been slow to get to those in need, supposedly due to the Myanmar government. I don't know if we have any fans in this part of the world, or if other areas were impacted by this storm. Hopefully aid will reach those who need it before it is too later. The storm hit with wind speeds of 120-150 MPH.

Yeah this was pretty bad, I hope the help they are getting now will maybe make things a little better for the people living there. Also though it pisses me off that Al Gore says this is a result from global warming. I mean any bad thing that happens now gets turned into an effect of global warming.

May. 8, 2008 | 2:17 PM WadeFulp responds:

Figures Al Gore would use something like this to blame Global Warming and sell more of his books and DVDs. Much more powerful storms then this existed in the early 1900's before we were massively burning fossil fuels, etc. So me a cyclone with 250-300MPH winds, something much higher than anything on record, and then maybe he'd have something to go on, but even then we don't know how powerful these storms were pre 1900's because we don't have accurate weather data going back that far.

May. 8, 2008 | 2:09 PM Phil says:

what? :|

May. 8, 2008 | 2:09 PM Malachy says:

apparently cyclones can be easily warned against up to 48 hours before they hit. The military government is afraid that if foreign aid gets in, their corruption and poor human rights will be brought to light for all the world to see, and they are really only making that worse by making it hard for aid to get into the country.

May. 8, 2008 | 2:10 PM Phantox says:

I think I heard it on the news a little while ago. I was surprised with the number of deaths.

May. 8, 2008 | 2:20 PM BlueHippo says:

Wow, that's one whopper of a storm. Our nation needs to be more concerned with what goes on in the world, not just events that happen in the US, or neighboring countries. I'm a little embarrassed this is the first time I've heard about this.

Although it does seem that Dubbya is making an attempt to help them, but their military doesn't want us to help. America as usual tries to step in and be the world policesdfd... ha, as I was typing this, word just spread around the office as my coworker just came back from lunch and heard about it... I guess today is the "America finds out about the cyclone" day... how many days late?

Anyways I'm no good at expressing political thoughts and views, so I'll just shut up and link to this video:

May. 8, 2008 | 2:21 PM CaptainBob says:

It's really lame how the US has a carrier group in the area that was conducting an aid relief excercise, and had all of the supplies ready to go even before the cyclone hit, and yet the idiot generals are far too scared shitless of losing power to let the US send aid in.

May. 8, 2008 | 2:21 PM darknessthehedgehog says:

woah i fell sorry for the people who always get this kind of weather

May. 8, 2008 | 2:27 PM Davidzx says:

holy shit, I hope our guys didnt get hit down there. and I hope whoevers missing would find help, when exacly did the cyclone hit anyways?

May. 8, 2008 | 2:27 PM simple-but-sandy says:

I heard that France are threatening some sort of military action if the governement don't accept aid.

That won't really help the situation much...

May. 8, 2008 | 2:36 PM WadeFulp responds:

Well, the world can't stand by and let a few idiot leaders allow tens of thousands of people to die because they are stubborn. That's like a crime against humanity or something and a cause to go to war.

Updated: May. 8, 2008, 2:36 PM

May. 8, 2008 | 2:40 PM Sonni says:

I live in Thailand and we're next to Burma. I've just heard the news recently as well. I'm not sure anyone knows this yet but allthough the media from the military junta in Burma claims the death toll is at around twenty thousands the report from AFP says that the toll is actually up to eighty thousands or more.

May. 8, 2008 | 2:48 PM WadeFulp responds:

I'm hearing there are rumors the death toll is already past 100,000, meaning by the time aid gets to these people it could be even higher.

I suspect these people had no warning from their government, and have yet to receive any help from their government. It's a bad situation, and that people in charge of the government there should hang.

The fact that many of us are just hearing about this now is probably an indication that the government there didn't warn their people, didn't ask for help, and didn't report the situation to anyone and the story had to leak out through other outlets.

May. 8, 2008 | 3:48 PM Sterance says:

This is why I don't watch the news anymore... They only report tragedies.

Although this reminds me of a massive earthquake that hit Turkey a while back. Myanmar should be much better off than them, because I think Myanmar actually has allies and foreign relations. Hopefully they are able to clear out the dead before the airborne diseases start to spread... thats what hurt Turkey the most I think.

Also, as far as global warming goes, this year was record snowfall and snow pack in most places around the US. Also Al Gore did NOT win the nobel peace prize, the 40 or so scientists he represents won the peace prize. Al Gore had nothing to do with it.

May. 8, 2008 | 4:14 PM Vndgl says:

Six days to respond with a relief effort? I'll be honest and say I don't know the time or effort it requires to provide help to devastated countries, but what took so long?

Wikipedia (my main source of information on subjects) said the reported fatalities is 63,500 but could be in the 100,000s. That's just unimaginable. Before hearing about this, I didn't know Burma existed.

May. 8, 2008 | 7:26 PM WadeFulp responds:

It was the Myanmar government, they aren't allowing foreign aid in. Bush is pissed, France is pissed, etc. Last I checked, we were still waiting to go in with aid because of their government.

That is terrible.

May. 8, 2008 | 4:48 PM elliez3 says:

i heard that because of this, thousands of people are starting an uproar/riot to destroy the government
hopefully, it wont happen

May. 8, 2008 | 7:28 PM WadeFulp responds:

Why!? The government is leaving everyone to suffer and die and the people hopefully won't over throw the current government?

May. 8, 2008 | 5:46 PM Adio-Element says:

Thats fucking huge.

May. 8, 2008 | 6:07 PM Kirk-Cocaine says:

This was all over the papers today. Apparently, the Burmese leader is only giving $250,000 in aid to help his own people, whereas a few years ago he spent 25 MILLION on his daughter's wedding. Crazy =/

May. 8, 2008 | 7:31 PM WadeFulp responds:

Maybe he wants these people to die, less for him to worry about... I doubt he'll be in a position of power for long. If his own people don't take him out, the rest of the world might.

May. 8, 2008 | 6:15 PM SupraAddict says:

I'm pretty sure they're going to get worse. Not just Mayanmar, but worldwide.
I hope most of the people missing make it long enough to hold out and join their families. But I guess it's just wishful thinking...

May. 8, 2008 | 6:31 PM Nuttro says:

How come I wasnt told about this :o

May. 8, 2008 | 7:06 PM Sir-Nuts says:

I saw it on TV a couple of times, and the situation is awful. Some news channels say that there can be more than 50.000 people dead/missing.

It's unbelievable. Even their geography changed, the country "shrunk" in it's size due to the cyclone. I can't believe things like that are possible...

Well, let's hope that they accept international help. Brazil mentioned something about sending people to help them.

May. 8, 2008 | 7:30 PM WadeFulp responds:

When powerful storms, cyclones, hurricanes (same thing), hit land they can often alter the coast line. In this situation the storm pushed water up into the delta causing a storm surge, which may have been massive, which washed inland, churned up the coast, and probably swept thousands of people away. The #1 cause of death was probably storm surge, followed by inland flooding and wind damage.

May. 8, 2008 | 8:05 PM SevenSeize says:

That is quite the storm.

I've been talking about it with my class. We read about hurricanes, then went to weather websites and looked at sattelite images.

I'm SO not ready for hurricane season here.

May. 8, 2008 | 8:45 PM WadeFulp responds:

At least we have plenty of warning and can get out of the way or to a shelter. Shame more people didn't get out of New Orleans before Katrina hit. I think a lot of that was the stupidity of the people and the local government not getting out of there, and not providing enough means for the people to get out.

May. 8, 2008 | 8:30 PM Aznime says:

How horrible. What sucks even more, the government doesn't even help.

May. 8, 2008 | 9:44 PM ThisUserNameSucks says:

So, I guess all government everywhere is piss-crazy. It's a terrible thing when this stuff happens. Does the government even realize what help we can do if we send troops over there? Look what happened to New Orleans, sure hundreds died, but hundreds more might've died, had it not been for us. Why can't the government just take their asses out of their ears and realize what is happening to their people and let us in? D:

May. 8, 2008 | 9:53 PM Wiiporter says:

My god, that's terrible! I send my love to Myanmar...

May. 8, 2008 | 9:57 PM SniperWolf1564 says:

I find it even more ironic how the Myanmar government asked the UN for help, but yet they are resistant to help.

From what I have been reading on Wikipedia, their people are frustrated with the lack of a warning system about the cyclone, and they are blaming their junta government for the cyclone and the mass flooding. There are no measures to deal with the corpses that are appearing on the streets, as they are just being abandoned, which is bringing up the issue of the spread of diseases.

This isn't much of a suprise for me, since I have been reading up on Burma's human rights violations, and evidence that is suggesting that a genocide is occuring on the Karen minority. This has me convinced that their government is probably not willing to help their people.

May. 8, 2008 | 10:16 PM fede1920 says:

OMG ! That's horrible, i hope the ONU do something about it...

May. 8, 2008 | 11:02 PM Hylian-Mafia says:

When I heard this disaster on the news I was just amazed and shocked to see that the government of Myanmar wouldn't let the U.S. help aid them and even the government isn't even helping their own people out. I am so glad I live in the US where the government isn't a bitch. Hopefully the Myanmar gov will let the US aid the people of Myanmar.

I thought you were planning to dirrect us to donate to a relief fund.

May. 9, 2008 | 1:30 AM karkynplague says:

Wo, sounds very suspicious on their governments part. Maybe their hiding something?

May. 9, 2008 | 4:39 AM Cyberdevil says:

I read the news, first they said hundreds died, then thousands, then tens of thousands, then hunreds of thousands, now they say it may be near a million. That's a lot of peopl . . .

May. 9, 2008 | 7:17 AM risbolla says:

Together we watch the news in apathy, only making ourselves look like we care so that we don't look like assholes in each other's eyes, and perhaps we throw money at them to make sure everybody in doubt can see what humanitarians we are.

120-150 MPH is nothing compared to us, we revolve around our own ego at an infinite speed, and the damage we do to others is devastating.

May. 9, 2008 | 10:23 AM J-Flash says:

Im studying this in my Geography class
Apparently the military authorities were barring aid and relief at one stage
Idiots.

May. 9, 2008 | 6:55 PM jagdeep2 says:

It's just going to be another way to blame global warming to get money. We're already being told that we're all going to die within 10 years and thats got most of us guzzling out money, hopefully people will realize that this is propaganda. People in my social class usually say that the people in Russia were stupid for falling for Stalin's lies, but they obviously can't look at themselves.
Hey it'd really like if you could youtube/google the Bothchild's family and give me your prespective on the matter because it really seems to make sense.

May. 9, 2008 | 7:50 PM alternativesolution says:

Damn..that really sucks.
I hope things work out well over there.
Nature just isn't very nice, sometimes. That's when I feel like burning trees.
And then I realize that wouldn't help anything.

May. 9, 2008 | 7:55 PM alternativesolution says:

Wtf? SIX DAYS!?
That is a HELL of a long time. What the hell is wrong with their government? Do they want their people do die?
Overthrowing it does sound like a nice idea. Of course, not now..that would make matters much worse.

May. 9, 2008 | 9:16 PM Wholyish says:

Well, I happen to live in Florida and know a thing or two about hurricaines. Let me just say it sucks, and that their government needs to suck it up and let foreign help in. I mean, without any of the aid we get down here from the state and country after hurricaines, we'd be screwed every other year. And as far as the global warming increasing hurricaines: those major hurricaines were back in 2005, and we've had two relatively mild seasons since, so there's so many holes in that story that it looks like swiss cheese.

May. 10, 2008 | 12:49 AM SniperWolf1564 says:

The situation has gotten worse. Because the Burman government is seizing relief materiel, the UN is starting to back off.

May. 10, 2008 | 5:14 AM AapoJoki says:

I think the Military government of Myanmar wants to make it appear as though they're not dependant on other countries, which is why they won't accept any help. That's not uncommon for countries under dictatorship rule.

It's just a damn delusion. Even stronger, more stable countries need help during crises like these. The fact the Burmese government doesn't want to compromise the illusion of its total independence of the world is a clear sign that they don't give a shit about their people.

May. 10, 2008 | 10:21 AM elliez3 says:

I know, I just heard about that a day or so ago. What's ridiculous about it is that the government isn't letting foreign people to go in there to help. They're barely even accepting foreign aid. And the government of Myanmar isn't doing anything to help. Somebody's gotta talk some sense into Myanmar's government and tell them to allow more aid for the city.
