Ever thought about making newgrounds flashlights and selling em in the store?

Okay... I think Light-emittin' diodes are awesome, but I'm beginning to think you're obsessed with them from the comments; no offense intended.

We all have our obsessions. You appear to be obsessed with train signals. :) One could aruge that's stranger than my obsession with flashlights. Flashlights are widely used tools which many depend on in life and death situations. Police, firefighters, military, etc, use high end flashlights from companies such as Surefire, Pelican, Streamlight, etc. They aren't putting your regular old 2-D battery plastic flashlight on their rifles, etc. They need their lights to perform a specific task and there are many configurations available to meet their needs. For me it is interesting to learn about these types of things. I like gadgets and gear. Be it knives, guns, flashlights, etc. I appreciate quality tools that have practical everyday uses.

So LED flashlights (white) running on a single 1.2-1.5 volt battery?
Interesting. For a white led you do need a voltage of about 3.2Volts though.
But I've read somewhere that you can gain a slightly higher voltage from a 1.5V battery by making a pretty simple circuit with a coil and something else, I forgot.

So that means those flashlights are made using that circuit, otherwise they can never power that Led.
Unless... They discovered a nex technique to produce white leds with a drop voltage lower than 1.5Volts...

(I study electronics)

These flashlights do indeed contain circuitry that regulates the voltage/current to the LED. Those E01 LED's probably need around 3.2V, so the circuit just pulls enough current from the 1.5v AAA to boost the voltage to 3.2v and probably sends around 20-25mA to the LED. The E01 uses a Nichia GS LED if you want to research that. It isn't pure white, it has a purplish tint to it.

The LOD-CE uses a Cree XR-E 7090 and also has to boost the voltage to around 3.2-3.4v. The Vf of the LED's varies and can increase as you send more current to the LED. I have special 3v lithium ion AAA's that run around 4.0v fully charged. When I place them into the LOD-CE the regulation circuit is bypassed and the light runs in direct drive mode, meaning the LED draws as much power as it can from the battery, usually around 1.2A on a fully charged battery. So around 4v at 1.2A or there abouts, resulting in the Cree LED producing around 250-260 lumens at the emitter, and 200 or so lumens out the front of the flashlight.

did you know that Swain was rubbing a flashlight in his ass? well, i hope it wasnt your flashlight

Wasn't mine, probably one of Tim's flashlights. People that like to work with their hands, like get inside a computer and work on it, often need a flashlight to see what they are doing.

Flashlights.. Hmm! I've never thought of them the way you just explained. But that is a very good retrospect. I'm now going to be looking at flashlights in a new light.
lol, Pun intended unintentionally!
I have a flashlight with an LED that changes colours, It's quite intriguing actually.

Didn't know you know so much about electronics ;)
I made a kind of flashlight myself, using a piece of PVC tube and 5 Standard white Leds, and powered with such a standard 9V battery. Was pretty fun to make :)
Do you have your own electronic projects too from time to time?

I've been known to dabble with electronics:

I wish I had one.

To someone who doesn't have any idea that might look cool :p
Nice glasses, but all I see is a soldering iron, a magnifying glass and a multimeter.

Is it just me, or did you take that pic just for the show? ^.^
Because all you could be doing there is just soldering those battery wires onto something^^

(No offense though)

I was putting together a simple rig of LED lights for Mindchamber's Minchamber robot figure. It was just soldering wires to LED's, resistors, a switch, and a 9V battery connector.

they sound really good, but where do you get them, coz i skimmed read it a few times and couldn't see anything that told you where to get it.

never mind, im tired and didnt see the links

Wade I applluad your straightforwardness and honesty about your 'indie' obsession. I seem to think of it as unique rather than weird and I suppose every guy has a unusual streak inside him. For starters, I like to keep old shopping recipes. I dunno why. it's just me :D

at my previous comment, I mean shopping receipts not recipes. D'oh'

i saw on the news once that some famaily buisness has invented a street light that uses LED lights. it conserves more power and lasts longer to. soo soon enough all houses and anything uses lights will all use LEDs.

oh and i was able to tell u like flash lights a long time ago from looking at ur user header. :P

How much is the battery to supercharge the flashlight?

I think a pair of 10440 cells and the charger is around $15.

Hey wade I thought that your post was really cool, check out my imitation its pretty funny

uncle fulp!

You should make a flash animation Wade. :P

Like flashlights do you.

If you aren't already, I suggest you become a member of
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/ it's probably the best flashlight forum on the web. If you don't know about it already, have a look here for some decent cheap flashlights http://www.dealextreme.com/

Yes, I know a bit about flashlights. But not because I'm into them myself, it's because I'm into a closely related hobby.

That is, LASERS!!

I have about $4000 worth of lasers myself. Much better than flashlights in my opinion, lol. Blue lasers, green lasers, red lasers, laser scanning systems, I've got it. I'm not talking about little pansy pointers either, I'm talking the kind with clearly visible beams and can burn through plastic. If you're interested in lasers, I suggest you go here, best laser pointer forum on the net: http://www.laserpointerforums.com/

Sorry about the advertising, but it's a little hard to talk about this stuff without consulting a website that isn't newgrounds :P
