LED's!

Posted by WadeFulp - August 3rd, 2007

I guess I should post something new. So has anyone been following the exciting break throughs they are making with LED's? At some point they should start replacing all of our street lights, parking lot lights, and some home lighting. The great thing about LED's is they can now put out a lot of light and use far less power and materials than current light bulbs, sodium vapor lights, mercury vapor, flourescents, etc. For those concerned with our energy consumption, replacing all our lights (someday) with LED lights, nationwide, would result in a major reduction of energy use. Did I also mention LED's last 50,000 to 100,000 hours, or longer?

The first place many of the latest and greatest LED's are showing up is in flashlights. It seems every few weeks there is a more efficent LED hitting the market and soon after some company is putting them into a flashlight.

So who here has any of the newer LED based flashlights?

Here's a shot of a standard old 3D Maglite (3 brand new D batteies installed) next to a much smaller LED light with the new Phillips Lumileds Luxeon Rebel 100lm LED:

LED's!

Amazing.

I have a laser that goes like 3 miles.

Lasers are cool, and they are making advances with lasers as well, but I don't think lasers would make practical street lights, home lighting, etc.

I got one of the LED lights, it has 2 LEDs and by god, it blinds you!

you and your flashlights wade....

I had that a week ago, Sister pointed that to my eye and my eyes gone much worse if not blind after that.

-Holy shit. A flash light with a regular 100 watt bulb could never do that. :0

-The world would be an ever brighter place if they did that. But, wouldn't there be side effects? :/

wow cool, whats the price of those LED flashlights? are they being used in home lighting already?

You can pick up the newer LED flashlights from various websites. One site, www.dealextreme.com, has all kinds of cheap stuff, mostly Chinese made. It's shipped from Hong Kong (pretty cheaply actually), but takes a couple weeks to arrive, and the quality control isn't always the best so you could end up with a dud, etc. The light pictured above is made by Fenix, and they can run in the $50-70 range. If anyone is seriously interested PM me and I can give you a place to order one from.

that flashlight got PWNED!

halogens. all there is to it :P

hehehe...

I have a lamp that is just led's, It has a goose neck, so I just point it where I want light, right now it's on my wall letting me see all the work I have to do on that movie. I also have an led flashlight. It's one of those jack off ones, so no batteries required. The only problem is, the light is not very bright but hey, it was free!

Also, I read somewhere that, I think one of the Koreas was doing that, replacing street lamps with led based ones.

LED's pwn!

well im not going to get burrernd by a layser

I own an LED, but it has that blue tint around the edges. Can't wait until they get an absolute white LED. Maybe that's why they don't have them in our streetlamps yet. Imperfection.

The newer LED's are much whiter. The older LED's had all kinds of horrible color tints. If you look at my picture you will see the LED based light on the left is white, the maglite on the right is yellowish.

I am going to buy an LED flash light asap. I need one because I go camping a lot. Thanks Wade.

We've had some traffic lights replaced with LED's over here in California some years ago during that "Energy Crisis" in a attempt to save power.

Well, I just picked up an Inova T3 on Friday. The newer version, with a reflector!
But I guess that's not surprising, coming from me. :)

No Cree-based LED lights yet. The 3-C model at the claimed 150 lumens that Rayovac is supposed to introduce soon at Wal-Mart will probably be my first Cree-based light. So far, not out yet. Meijer has them in stock. But I can't find a Meijer store in NYC. It's ironic.... I know where to buy Surefires and even a Night-ops Gladius from Brick & Mortar stores in NYC. But I can't track down one Rayovac model. Don't know whether to laugh or cry about that.

BTW, are you getting the same, constant, "Database Error" message every time you try to visit a certain forum outside of NG? Cause I'm definitely getting that now..... everytime I try to click on a topic. Hitting Refresh doesn't help. CPF desperately needs a programmer who knows what he's doing. This problem existed before they updated the site. Everything was fine for awhile, and now the problems are back; worse than ever. :(

Yeah, I've had problems with CPF now and then, but most of the time it's fine. I want o pick up the Rayovac too, I've been checking local Walmarts, no luck yet. I've heard some people are reporting poor heat syncing and their LED's are shifting color, burning out, etc. We'll see.

Seems about half of those who have found the Rayovac model are reporting those problems. Still, for the price, I think it's worth taking a chance on one. The shifting, color problem might have to do with the Cree LED itself. Crees are still too new to have a proven track record for reliability, but definitely bright as Hell.... There's 2 Super Wal-Marts near me, I'll let you know if I find the light the next time I check them. (Hopefully, I'll be updating you soon).

And hopefully CPF is working a bit more reliably today. Problem is, I don't think anyone had a clue the site would get so big. Traffic is probably overloading the servers..... again. Love the site, but if it were a car; It'd leave me stranded by the side of the road a few times.

Yeah, I see what you mean with CPF, I'm having more problems lately. I've done my part to donate to them, hopefully more people will help chip in so they can afford more improvements.

The CREE's in my lights, and in others, seem to be holding up fine. I think it's something with the way Rayovac built the lights. Some of them may not have made a good thermal connection between the CREE LED and the star it sits on, or may not have made good contact between the star and the flashlight's body. If this is the case the LED's could quickly over heat at the level they are driving them at. I'll probably check mine for good contact before firing them up. I may pick up a tube of artic silver at Radio Shack and squirt some under the star.

BTW, as you know, Surefire is now putting CREE's in their lights, so if that's the case, Surefire feels the CREE's will stand the test of time. :)

People break apart car headlights to get expensive halogen bulbs. Plz discuss. kthx.

leds are awesome. they use barley any power and the flashlight image proves my point. there more efficient. period.

Hey Wade, I have a JetBeam JetMXII: http://flashlightreviews.com/reviews/
jetbeam_jet-1mk2.htm
which is rated at 75 lumens. Its a tiny 4inch flash light that runs on AA batteries. Currently there is a newer version that is the same size using the fantastic cree leds rated at 150 lumens!!!!! same size and any every thing.

The reason I got it was to film during dark situation with out having to lug around stupid huge 70w torches. I made a small hot shoe adapter so I could add it to the camera and it has served its purpose very well.

Cool! I don't have any Jetbeam lights yet, but I hear people talking about them. Sometimes these lights put out too much light for some appication. If you're working in the dark a really bright light may screw up your night vision if you need to turn it off to view something in the darkness.

Hi Wade!! How is that LED?? and i noticed that u dont post in frontpage why?

Why would I want to post this shit on the frontpage? :)
